Find New Friends with Food

popcornAs some upperclassmen already know, the college environment is one of the easiest places to make friends and meet new people. Surrounded by thousands of like-minded people who are all in the same boat, they are most likely looking to make new friends as well! One of the most welcoming ways to get to know new people is through food, something that commonly brings people together and initiates even the most basic of conversations to break the ice. Preparing healthier snack options in college can be extremely challenging, especially if you live in a dorm room with only a refrigerator and microwave, however, it is possible. If you get creative and do a little prep work, you can come up with a simple spread of healthy snacks for your social gatherings. Listed below are some dorm friendly ideas that are tasty and perfect for entertaining without packing on the “Freshman 15”:

  • Popcorn tossed with parmesan cheese and black pepper
  • Pre-cut veggies and a light ranch dip made with ranch dressing mix and Greek yogurt or cottage cheese
  • Honey wheat pretzel sticks with peanut butter
  • Mini “pizzas” made with whole wheat crackers, pizza sauce, and shredded cheese
  • Pita chips and hummus
  • Roll-ups made with turkey or ham, Laughing Cow spreadable cheese, and whole wheat tortillas
  • Whole grain tortilla chips and salsa
  • Fruit and yogurt dip made with Greek yogurt and strawberry jam
  • Honey or cinnamon graham crackers topped with Nutella
  • Chocolate graham crackers and a cream cheese dip made with cream cheese and honey
  • Trail mix made with dried fruit, nuts, and dark chocolate chips or M&M’s

So now that you have a few ideas of foods to throw together for your next dorm room gathering, take the initiative and invite the person next to you in class or the next-door neighbors over this weekend for a movie marathon!
