College students live hectic lives and sometimes get so caught up with midterms, deadlines, and meetings that they forget to take care of their bodies. With the stress that accumulates from midterms and the imminent arrival of winter, it is about time to give your skin some extra love. Below are a few inexpensive, delicious, and fun DIY mask ideas for your next girl’s night in, or for those times you just want to sit down, relax, and pamper yourself.

Oatmeal & Honey

The first thing that comes to mind when you hear the word “oatmeal” is probably that bowl of grains you eat for breakfast. Sure, oats are well known for their nutritional benefits, but did you know that they do wonders for the skin as well? Along with their anti-inflammatory properties, oats act as a gentle exfoliant, which is perfect for those with sensitive skin. Depending on your preference and how sensitive your skin is, you can grind the oats into a fine powder for less exfoliation or keep them intact for greater exfoliating power. To give this facial mask even more soothing properties, add in a teaspoon or two of honey. Honey, which contains anti-inflammatory as well as anti-microbial properties, helps the skin retain moisture while keeping it firm and smooth.

DIY Oatmeal Honey Mask

1/2 cup hot water

1/3 cup oatmeal

2 tablespoons honey

  1. Combine the hot water and oatmeal in a small bowl and allow it to thicken.
  2. Mix in the honey.
  3. Apply a thin layer of the mask and let it sit for 10-15 minutes.
  4. Rinse with warm water.

Greek Yogurt

Greek yogurt has been receiving a lot of praise in the health world for its high protein content and incredible versatility. More than just a convenient breakfast or snack food, Greek yogurt is also effective for purifying and smoothing your skin. The acid found in the Greek yogurt may also help clear blemishes, correct discoloration and reduce redness. If you are going to make a Greek yogurt mask, make sure to use the plain variety, and not the flavored types.

Soothing Honey and Yogurt Mask

1/2 cup plain Greek yogurt

2 tablespoons oats

1 tablespoon honey

  1. Mix the yogurt, oats, and honey in a small bowl until thoroughly combined.
  2. Apply a thin layer to the face and let sit for 10-15 minutes.
  3. Rinse with warm water.


The next time you have avocados lying around, ditch the chips & guac recipe and use this fruit instead to make a moisturizing face-mask instead. In terms of nutrition, avocados are a great source of heart healthy fats, which translates into a great moisturizer when applied to the skin. For those who have dry skin, the avocado’s high fat content and moisture make it a perfect choice for a facial mask. Oatmeal is added to this mask to give it some exfoliating and anti-inflammatory power.

Half of an avocado

2 tablespoons oats

Mash the avocado into a fine paste.

  1. Mix in the oats.
  2. Apply a thin layer onto the face and let it sit for 10-15 minutes.
  3. Rinse with warm water.
