Lack of time is a major reason why many college students tend to forego healthy eating, especially with final exams creeping up. What many college students do not realize is that it only takes a little bit of pre-planning to ensure that meals and snacks are healthy during the day, saving you time in the long-run. The following are a few tips that can help you stay on top of healthy habits during this busy and stressful time of the semester!
Preparing in advance- Pre-packaging and prepping your food for easy assemble will make things easier as you are rushing to get out the door in the morning. The night before, think about what snacks you want to bring with you the next day. Cutting up fruit and putting trail mix or pretzels in baggies ahead of time saves you from rushing around in the morning. In addition to preparing in advance, make sure the foods you pack are easy to eat. Typically this includes items that do not require utensils, such as sandwiches, fresh fruits, and dry snacks such as crackers.
Carry a water bottle- While making sure you pack to have with you throughout the day, it is also just as important to carry fluids with you! Carrying a reusable water bottle is not only beneficial to the environment, but it also helps you keep hydrated. During stressful times, such as finals, it can be easy to forget to drink enough. If you carry your water bottle with you, it serves as a constant reminder to drink!
Eat before you leave- A quick snack before you leave your apartment or dorm will save you from having to stop by the vending machine during the day. This also reduces the amount of food you need to carry with you.
Remember the fruits and veggies- The best part about fruits and vegetables is that many of them are easy to take with you. Fruits and vegetables such as apples, bananas, baby carrots, and celery sticks do not require utensils! Grabbing an apple on the way out of your dorm or apartment, or even the dining hall, is an easy way to make sure you get your daily dosage of fresh fruit during finals. Opt for these healthy snacks instead of making the trek to the vending machine or stopping at a convenience store for a sugary snack.
Finals week is a very hectic time for everyone, and even when it does not seem possible, you can still eat well when you are running low on time. Planning is key when it comes to maintaining healthy eating with a busy schedule. Do not forget the importance of eating, drinking, and maintaining your health!
