Spruce Up Your Sandwich!

sandwich6The tradition of piling meats, cheeses, condiments and toppings between two pieces of bread to form a single masterpiece has been evolving ever since ancient times. However, many food historians consider 18th-centuryEuropean Jack Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich, the creator of the “sandwich.” He receives credit not because he invented this vertical food amalgamation, but rather because he was the first to associate convenience and simplicity with the idea. Montagu was an avid gambler who did not like to be bothered with distractions during his games, not even at mealtime. His cook knew this, so he presented Montagu with steak laid between two pieces of toast. Montagu loved this concept because it was quick to eat and could be consumed with one hand, freeing his other for gambling.

There are hundreds of different sandwich varieties tailored for people who love convenience and have an on-the-go lifestyle. People from around the world employ Montagu’s brilliance every day by simply throwing together a sandwich in a bag and calling it a day. But convenience doesn’t have to mean routine, so here are some unique sandwich ideas that also accommodate to our busy lives while still keeping them interesting.
